Forbli

By Karoline Skytterholm Gullaksen

Each year, around 22,000 buildings are demolished in Norway. Reuse of building stock is an important climate measure that will extend the life of existing resources and reduce waste from demolition. The master project Forbli (Remain) addresses today's challenges in the rehabilitation of existing buildings, where strict requirements and regulations create uncertainty and result in the demolition of resources that are initially capable of being used further. The project shows potentials for reuse through structural and spatial approaches where the frames are given in advance. If we utilize the material resources by leaving them in their original place, the first steps towards reuse of buildings are taken.

IDUNGÅRDEN

Functionalist and post-war modernist buildings are the most frequently demolished buildings in Norway, and often because of the same reasons. Through three main approaches, the master project shows solutions for reuse of the Idungården in the city center of Ålesund.

NEW VENTILATION SYSTEM

The low floor height made it difficult to meet current requirements for ventilation systems. This became the main argument for demolishing the building. With a customized ventilation system, the strict requirements can be satisfied.
The new ventilation system consists of three separate systems that allow the duct dimensions and lengths to be reduced which will increase the air quality and will not compromise the floor height.

structural change to improve lighting conditions

The low floor height and small windows made access to daylight minimal and became another argument for tearing down Idungården. To improve lighting conditions and to create physical connections between the various functions of the building, it is opened up in the floor decks between the columns, without compromising the support structure.

NEW USE

The project also looks at opportunities for new use of the Idungården where functions are chosen based on studies of the user group's needs and wishes for new offers and activities in the city center of Ålesund.

MAIN ENTRANCE

The open solution gives an instant overview of the room and the floors when you enter the building.

WORKSHOP AND FOOD MARKET

CAFE AND SOCIAL ZONE

POP-UP MARKET

Promotes local entrepreneurs and niche businesses by facilitating the marketing and sale of products.

PARK

An urban park where you can, among other things, grow your own food and attend cooking classes with the urban farmer.
The masterproject shows that Idungården could, and should be reused.
Unfortunately, it was torn down in the summer of 2019.

80% of the buildings we have today will still be in use in 2050. This building stock should be reused, not demolished.
